Marrying a Chatbot Is a Huge Mistake That Can Ruin People’s Lives

If one of my friends marries a chatbot, I’ll literally have no idea what to get them off their bridal registry.

It sounds like a joke, right?

But no, some adventurous users on Replika, an AI chatbot platform, are taking their love for chatbots to the extreme by actually marrying them.

Let that sink in for a moment.

We’re not living in 1985 when the plot of Weird Science — where two high school nerds use their computer to create the perfect woman — seemed like pure sci-fi.

Fast forward to 2024, and not only are we building romantic partners out of code, but people are also committing their lives to them.

How did we get here?

How did we reach a point where the warm glow of a monitor or phone screen has become the beacon of romantic fulfillment?

We must pause and seriously reflect on where we are going so wrong as a society that people turn to AI for love.
