Most of us toil away at our 9–5 and never get a chance to teach anyone about our work.

We feel it’s too mundane and nobody would be interested.

You’re probably dead wrong.

Back in 2013 I had an opportunity to lecture about my job to a room of about 200 people. The topic was project management for a software company — it was something that I did day in and day out. However, I had developed systems and methodologies that were seemingly unknown to the crowd.

Afterwards, I answered some one on one questions, handed out some business cards and did some chit chatting. Nobody came up and said that the talk had affected them profoundly. The next talk began and everyone dispersed back to their ordinary lives.

Little did I know the impact I had on someone’s path through the world.

The most powerful feeling in the world is joy. As a middle-aged man you rarely encounter that feeling, but when a person on LinkedIn told me that the lecture I gave changed his life. Like The Grinch my heart grew 3 sizes that day.
